The Perfect Psychopath

Thank you, Harper Collin’s publishers, and NetGalley for the advance copy of this book.

Every time I read a book; I made a judgement about who I think the ‘killer’ is. I write it down in my notebook and leave it there until the end. I did that with this book. Boy, was I wrong!

Alice Hunter, author of the ‘Serial Killer’ series and ‘Bad Apple,’ has delivered again. In fact, I’d go as far as to say, that this is the best book so far. Using her own background as a nurse, along with her completion of a psychology degree and working in a prison, Alice has served up a masterpiece.

Here is a brief synopsis: Dr. Eleanor Spencer, a renowned forensic psychologist, appears to have it all. She has a thriving career and a seemingly flawless life. However, her world is shattered when a string of disappearances echoes the haunting memory of her sister’s vanishing some years ago. Drawn into the investigation, Ellie’s own fears and past traumas resurface.

As the number of missing women grows, Ellie’s once-solid ground crumbles under mounting paranoia. To unearth the truth, she must plunge into the psyche of a deranged killer. Her journey leads her to Lucas Hayne, a notorious serial predator now imprisoned. Yet, it is Lucas cryptically suggests that the key to unlocking the killer’s identity lies hidden within Ellie’s own history.

This book is written in classic Alice Hunter style. Using a mixed media style such as case files, newspaper clippings, school year books and the varying point of view chapters, the story is told well and keeps you engrossed the whole way through. The pace of the story is electric and consumes you, encouraging you to keep going, never to stop reading.

The immersion into the world of psychology research adds a layer of nuance to the chapters that is an added bonus. The characters are rounded and well versed in their respective roles, evident through the words on the page. As you read the book, you can almost visualise the person you’re reading about.

Alice Hunter has delivered again. Impossible to put this one down.
