Hervey Bay

200km and approximately three hours from Buderim lies Hervey Bay. It is what can be described as a natural bay that is nestled between the mainland and Fraser Island.

Hervey Bay is home to golden beaches that stretch for around 15 kilometres. Families are gifted a safe environment to swim or simply just sit and enjoy surroundings. With facilities close by, it is a haven for families.

Hervey Bay is also a haven for wildlife, one particular form of wildlife. Whales. Hervey Bay is known as a sort of motor way service station for whales. A midway stop on their travels. To say you can have an intimate whale watching experience here, is an understatement. Our whale watching trip was with Tasman Venture.

Fraser Coast

The Fraser Coast is home to many small areas, all of which merge into each other. The main road through town is ‘Boat Harbour Drive’ which leads you to Torquay. Anyone that is from the UK will no doubt be having a little giggle and remembering the incomparable Basil Fawlty and his unique hotel.

Accommodation

We stayed at Hervey Bay tourist park which is located on Boat Harbour Drive. The park gives you cabins and spots for caravans. We had a two bedroom cabin which served all our needs  well.

Plans while we were there

The main aim of the trip was a whale watching excursion. While Dad has been out from Hervey Bay before, I had only been from Redcliffe. I was nervous to go, with my first experience not being the best! But let me say, Tasman Venture are superb.

Eating out

Eating out is easy in Hervey Bay for one simple reason. There are cafes and restaurants on every corner. You name it, it’s there. Italian, Thai, Chinese, and more. You also have the known fast food joints, McDonalds, KFC and Hungry Jacks. We ate in Hervey Bay Boat Club. It was a nice place and the food reasonably priced too.

Driving

Driving around the area is a pleasure and each area has its own little quirks and charm. We visited Torquay, Urangun, Booral, Point Vernon, Dundowran beach and Toogoom.

Of course, we must always remember that Hervey Bay is the gateway to Fraser Island, well one of them!  We didn’t do this on this trip, but this simply means I`ll have to come back!
