Mission Impossible

Dead Reckoning: Part 1

27 years ago, Tom Cruise introduced us to Ethan Hunt. The world became mesmerised with the I.M.F. (Impossible Mission Force) and let’s face it, we still are. Mission Impossible 1, 2 and 3 were followed by Ghost Protocol, Rogue Nation and Fallout. Now here we are with Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part 1.

Dead Reckoning is the latest addition to the franchise and is directed by Christopher McQuarrie. Ethan Hunt is taking on his most dangerous mission yet, where he must stop a sinister terrorist group from obtaining and using a dangerous weapon of mass destruction, known as ‘the entity.’ The entity is quite literally the world’s worst nightmare. It is a conscious artificial intelligence that infiltrates every nations computer systems. Nothing is sacred.

The movie’s plot line engages the viewer right from the start and does not let up until the end credits roll. The filmmakers have done a sublime job in raising tension and suspense, just what is needed to keep an audience on the edge of their seat through the cinematic experience. Multiple themes are layered throughout ensuring that there is added depth in the story line.

The characters are perfect. They’re well-loved through the franchise and let’s be honest, Tom Cruise can do no wrong with the Mission series. This one most certainly doesn’t disappoint as he delivers stunt after stunt.

With support from Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg and Rebecca Ferguson, as well as newcomer to Mission, Hayley Atwell, the characters and their action sequences were spot on. The dialogues were well-written and smartly delivered, adding humour, depth and quality to their characters.

Newcomer Hayley Atwell slotted into this franchise as if she’d always been here. Whether it was delivering lines or performing action sequences, she stole every scene she was in! Her chemistry with Tom Cruise is undeniable and that plays to the strength of her character.

She played Grace with a strength but also a vulnerability. A confidence but also nerves that you didn’t expect from someone as accomplished in her art as her character was. To be able to switch those emotions and make the watcher believe it, is something special

Christopher McQuarrie`s direction was masterful. He has crafted a film that is a visual delight, with stunning cinematography and an excellent musical score. The production design and special effects were top-notch, which is to be expected from a blockbuster movie like this. The pace of the movie was well-maintained, and the editing was crisp, making the action scenes captivating.

The movie kept me on the edge of my seat. I certainly didn’t feel that I had just watched a 2 ½ hour movie, the time flew by. It was entertaining, especially during the breathtaking action sequences.

Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning is an action-packed thriller with a gripping storyline that will leave you wanting more. I would highly recommend it to fans of the franchise and to anyone looking for an adrenaline-pumping movie experience.
