It beckoned me.

Where is Woodgate?

Woodgate, located 260km and roughly three hours away from Buderim, offers multiple routes for a picturesque journey. Opting for the direct route involves taking the M1 and A1, followed by a right turn just before Childers. This scenic drive not only provides a convenient path but also allows for delightful breakfast and coffee stops, making the trip as enjoyable as the destination itself.

When did I go?

On the 11th of December, I set off. I had booked for 4 nights away, staying somewhere I’d stayed before. December is summer but also prone to being a little ‘damp’ at times. In Australia, the predicted weather and the actual weather can be very different!!

I talk about I, but who am I?

I’m Joanne, a seasoned freelance writer with a lifelong passion for crafting compelling narratives. Although writing has been my constant companion throughout the years, it graciously stepped aside to make room for a fulfilling thirty-year career in nursing. Now, I proudly steer the helm of my own website, a project that holds a special place in my heart and represents the culmination of my dedication to the art of expression.

Reason for the trip

The reason for the trip was simple. Just to have a break away, nothing more, nothing less.

Planning the trip

Familiarity with a destination streamlines the planning process, bringing a heightened level of ease. In this instance, I had prior experience and knowledge of ideal accommodations, along with a ballpark estimate of expenses. The flexibility of my freelance work allows for a seamless schedule, with the freedom to work from any location — a mantra I adhere to: “Have laptop, will travel.” Accompanying me on this journey is my retired father, adding an extra dimension of leisure as time is a luxury we can fully embrace.

The trip

After a delightful four-hour journey, which included a satisfying breakfast stop, we arrived at Woodgate and seamlessly checked into our cozy cabin at Woodgate Beach Houses. It’s the small details that truly make an impression. Stepping into the cabin on this warm day, we were pleasantly surprised to find it thoughtfully prepared. The door was left unlocked, keys neatly placed on the table, and the air conditioning running, creating a refreshing atmosphere that instantly made us feel welcome. It’s these considerate touches that elevate the experience.

Eager to embrace the scenic surroundings, our first evening led us to Theodolite Creek, where we eagerly awaited the unfolding sunset. Following the picturesque moments by the water, we capped off the evening perfectly with a visit to the local pub. A quick sip of our drinks accompanied by some delectable spring rolls provided the ideal ending to a memorable day.

Tuesday 12 December

Following a tranquil morning respite, we embarked on a scenic drive, immersing ourselves in the charm of Bargara, Burnett Heads, and the surrounding locales. The sun-kissed afternoon led us to Bargara Hotel, where we indulged in a refreshing drink. Seated atop the cliff, we reveled in the captivating sight of families frolicking on the beach below.

A pleasant meal at the local pub finished off the evening perfectly.

Wednesday 13 December

Although our initial intention was to stroll along the beach this morning, the allure of a couple of coffees and a delightful bacon and egg roll led us astray from our original plan. As I nestled into the sofa engrossed in the latest Jeffrey Deaver novel, my trusty traveling companion (aka Dad) enjoyed the company of one of his cherished podcasts.

Our journey then took us to Walker Point, situated at the opposite end of the esplanade from Theodolite Creek. Amidst capturing picturesque moments with a few photos, sipping on a refreshing cold drink, and procuring a fresh loaf of bread (along with the spontaneous addition of an ice cream), we envisioned and embraced a laid-back and enjoyable day ahead.

Later that afternoon we ventured back to Walker Point to fly the drone and take some pictures.

Thursday 14 December

Following a restful night’s sleep and indulging in my customary bacon and egg roll (gratitude to Cotton Tree Meats for their delicious bacon), we made the spontaneous decision to traverse the entire stretch of the esplanade, from Theodolite Creek up to Walkers Point. Embarking on our journey by car, we swiftly recognised that the tide was high—mental note: always check in advance! Nevertheless, undeterred, we pressed on.

Throughout our expedition, we made impromptu stops at various locations, leaping out of the car to capture the scenic beauty through our lenses. The weather was scorching, the kind that made even walking on the sand an uncomfortably hot endeavour. Yet, our enthusiasm remained undiminished. The relentless heat failed to dissuade us from our exploration as we continued to savour the moments and capture the essence of the journey. Dinner at the pub tonight topped off the week.

Friday 15 December

Time for home today. A pleasant journey home followed by unpacking and laundry. That was the week that was!
