“What’s Next?”

Book Review

I’ve been a dedicated viewer of ‘The West Wing’ since its debut on UK television, thanks to a recommendation from my late husband. Ever since that first episode, I’ve found myself drawn back to the series every two years without fail. Recently, I stumbled upon a book that immediately caught my interest—it quickly became my top ‘must-have’ after saving its Amazon page with a screenshot.

“What’s Next” landed on my iPad on release day. Part of me hesitated to open it—knowing once started, I’d be captivated—but another part was eager to dive in. And so, I began.

The book opens with Aaron Sorkin and Allison Janney sharing the journey of bringing the series and the book to life. From there, it delves into the show’s inception, casting, and the vivid portrayal of different episodes in each chapter. Throughout, memorable quotes from the show enrich the narrative. At its core, the book celebrates what “The West Wing” champions: family. No cast member overshadows another; they form an ensemble, a cohesive unit.

Each part of the book lays out specific episodes. I was secretly pleased to see my favourites all addressed. I have a soft spot for ‘Two Cathedrals’. Why? The actors playing the young Dolores Landingham and Josiah Bartlett were absolutely sublime. I have another reason of course. Martin Sheen wowing us all with his speech after the funeral. Sheer perfection.

‘Game on’ is another personal favourite. The quote “Well, first of all, let’s clear up a couple of things.’Unfunded Mandate’ is two words, not one ‘big word’” always makes me smile. It was the moment that President Bartlet said, ‘don’t mess with me.’ The cutting of the tie is a moment that reflects the chemistry of Martin and Stockard.

I also hold a place in my heart for ‘The Supremes.’ I have been an admirer of Glenn Close’s work for many years, and she suited this role perfectly.  She embodied Evelyn Baker Lang and made her come alive.

This book, written in a conversational style, makes you feel as if you are with the cast sitting on the Roosevelt room set, as they share anecdotes and memories. It explores the charities they support, reveals audition processes, unveils character origin stories, and introduces the iconic ‘walk and talk’ of ‘The West Wing’.

It’s clear that “What’s Next” isn’t just a book—it’s a journey into the heart of “The West Wing” universe, a tribute to its enduring legacy and the talented ensemble that brought it to life. Through its pages, Aaron Sorkin and Allison Janney unveil the behind-the-scenes magic, from the show’s humble beginnings to its profound impact on television. As I immersed myself in its anecdotes and revelations, I felt a deeper connection to the characters and their stories. “What’s Next” is more than a backstage pass; it’s a celebration of family, unity, and the unforgettable moments that have made “The West Wing” a timeless classic.
