Old movies & choices

Since moving in with my parents, my dad and I have found ourselves with time to watch movies. Of course, you then have the age old “what shall we watch” discussion where everyone tries to please everyone!

So, how did I overcome this?

Easy. I stepped outside of my comfort zone. Way outside if I am honest.

I started with the DVD collection that I had established over the years. I then pulled out all the “I have never seen it” movies. I then pulled out the “I never wanted to see this” movies and finally I pulled out “here’s the movies I like, my dad may never have seen”

Needless to say I had a hell of a collection building up. Here are just a few of them:

  • 20000 leagues under the sea
  • Spartacus
  • 12 angry men
  • Longest day
  • Dambusters
  • Reach for the Sky
  • The Great Escape
  • Singing in the Rain
  • the Jazz Singer
  • A Bridge too far
  • Midnight Cowboy
  • Rainmaker
  • Its a wonderful life
  • Casablanca
  • Beverley Hills Cop
  • The graduate
  • Philadelphia

We hit the ground running and the first one was 20,000 Leagues under the sea. My dad remembered it was the first cinematic experience he had ever had. I bought the DVD and the memories came flooding back.

We have also watched 12 angry men, Philadelphia and currently are working our way through Lonesome Dove.

Of course we’ve watched old favourites such as A few good men, Unforgiven, Gladiator, We were Soldiers, Rain Man and more.
However, much as I love my “classic” movies such as Top Gun….stepping into a new world has been educational and fun. Most of all, it has given me quality time and laughs with Dad. That in itself is irreplaceable.
